The Evolution of a Rivalry

Earlier this year, a direct comparison was made between the original Xreal One Pro AR glasses and the Viture Beast—widely considered one of the top premium options available. In that initial showdown, the Viture Beast narrowly took the lead due to its competitive pricing, slightly superior technical specifications, and overall versatility.

Now, Xreal has launched an updated version of its flagship model, the Xreal One Pro Plus. This refresh includes a significantly upgraded display and improved ergonomics via a more comfortable nose pad. Having tested the new device, it is clear that the competition has become much tighter.

Xreal One Pro Plus: Boosting Performance

While the foundational specs of the Plus model remain largely consistent with its predecessor, Xreal has implemented key enhancements. The brightness has been increased from 700 to 1,200 nits—moving closer to the Beast’s output. Additionally, the color science has been refined to offer more accurate visuals for creative work.

A notable addition is the inclusion of three distinct display modes: Reading, Standard, and Movie. These settings automatically adjust the visual output based on the content being consumed, drastically improving the experience for tasks like reading eBooks or web browsing. Furthermore, the X1 chip now facilitates real-time 2D-to-3D content conversion at 60FPS, offering a smoother experience than the previous 30FPS limitation.

Understanding Tracking Limitations

Xreal has maintained the price point of $599. However, to unlock the full potential of the device, users still require the optional $99 Eye Camera. It is important to distinguish between the two tracking standards:

  • 3 Degrees of Freedom (3DoF): The «swivel chair» experience, where the screen is pinned to a specific direction and tracks only head rotation.
  • 6 Degrees of Freedom (6DoF): The spatial experience, which locks a screen to a physical coordinate in the room using the Eye camera.

Without the external camera, the device can struggle to maintain a stable image when the user is in a moving vehicle.

Viture Beast: The Content Powerhouse

The Viture Beast remains a formidable competitor, particularly for those prioritized gaming and media consumption. It maintains a slight edge in raw specifications, offering a broader 58-degree field of view, higher peak brightness, and superior sharpness. While Xreal is making strides in productivity, the Beast is clearly positioned as an entertainment-first device.

However, the Viture experience relies heavily on the Spacewalker app. While this provides useful tools like multi-screen support and AI-driven content conversion, it can lead to compatibility hurdles. As noted by some users, certain features are trapped within the app's interface—for instance, requiring the use of the proprietary Viture browser to watch 3D content on streaming platforms rather than native applications.

Verdict: A Tie at the Top

Ultimately, the choice between the Xreal One Pro Plus and the Viture Beast comes down to personal preference. Xreal’s update has successfully closed the performance gap, placing both headsets on equal footing. Both devices offer excellent electrochromic dimming and high-quality audio.

For those who feel these premium options are overkill, both companies offer entry-level alternatives around the $299 price point. While these budget models lack the expansive field of view found in the flagship pairs, they represent a more accessible entry into the world of AR display glasses. The industry is clearly moving toward a future where high-fidelity displays become more affordable for the average consumer.
