New Expressions for Complex Emotions

The Unicode Consortium continues to expand our digital vocabulary, offering a glimpse at nine upcoming emoji designs slated for release by next spring. Jennifer Daniel, chair of the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee, shared the designs ahead of World Emoji Day.

Among the highlights is the Cracking Face emoji. This design features a smiling face that appears to be crumbling, serving as a darker, more nuanced alternative to the popular 'Melting Face.' It perfectly encapsulates the feeling of maintaining a positive exterior while struggling internally. Originally considered as a 'Face with Squinting Eyes,' the design was finalized as Cracking Face to better reflect current cultural moods.

Celestial and Symbolic Additions

The update also introduces a Meteor emoji. While it resembles a flaming rock, it carries a vastly different meaning than the existing Comet. As noted by Daniel, while a comet is a passing celestial event, the meteor represents a more destructive force. To ensure the distinction, the existing Comet emoji will also be updated to feature a cooler, icy blue aesthetic.

Refining Nature and Utility

Nature lovers can look forward to a Monarch Butterfly, which arrives alongside a Net with Handle. The addition of the Monarch is a corrective measure for digital communication, as the previous 'Morpho' butterfly was often misinterpreted or inconsistently displayed across platforms. According to Daniel, the Monarch carries a deeper significance, representing "generational resilience, endurance and deep ancestral memory" rather than just aesthetic beauty.

Functional and Quirky Icons

Other additions include:

  • Lighthouse: A new landmark symbol.
  • Pointing Hands: Two hands with thumbs pointing left and right, useful for comedic emphasis or directional cues.
  • Eraser: A practical addition for digital editing conversations.
  • Pickle: A polarizing new addition that is sure to trigger strong reactions in group chats.
