Rapid Adoption of Valve’s Latest Hardware

Following its release in the latter half of September, the Steam Frame has quickly made its mark on the virtual reality landscape. October served as the first full month of consumer availability, and according to the latest Steam Hardware Survey, Valve’s sophisticated new headset has experienced a substantial increase in active usage.

In September, the device held a modest 0.41% share of the VR headset market on Steam. By October, this figure surged to 4.13%. This growth allowed the device to overtake several established competitors, including the Sony PS VR2, Oculus Rift S, HTC Vive, and Bigscreen Beyond. It currently ranks as the sixth most popular VR headset on the platform, trailing the Pico 4 by a narrow margin of 0.37%, while remaining 24.14% behind the market-leading Meta Quest 3.

Market Dynamics and Availability

The 3.72% gain recorded by the Steam Frame represented the most significant growth among all VR hardware in October. Conversely, the Oculus Quest 2 saw the largest decline, dropping by 3.57%. Since the Steam Frame officially launched on September 18, the increase in users reflects not only ongoing sales throughout October but also the fulfillment of initial preorders and shipping schedules.

The current demand appears to be strong, especially considering that both the 256 GB and 1 TB configurations are currently on backorder. The fact that the device has achieved such high adoption numbers despite logistical challenges suggests a notable, albeit potentially limited, segment of the VR market on Steam.

Interpreting Hardware Statistics

While these figures are encouraging for Valve, industry experts suggest viewing the Steam Hardware Survey data with caution:

«The Steam Hardware Survey is an opt-in survey Valve takes every month. This means it only looks at a fraction of Steam users to get general statistics.»

Because the survey relies on a voluntary sample, month-to-month fluctuations are common. For instance, even graphics card data often shows unexpected shifts, such as the minor changes observed with the Nvidia RTX 3060 and RTX 4060. Consequently, while the Hardware Survey provides an insightful glimpse into user trends, it functions best as a rough approximation of hardware popularity rather than an absolute census.
