Bringing Iconic Characters to the Track
The upcoming arcade racing title Star Wars: Galactic Racer offers fans a long-awaited opportunity to step into the boots—or rather, the cockpit—of legendary podracers from The Phantom Menace. Among the roster, the infamous alien Sebulba makes a notable return, appearing alongside other fan-favorites like Ben Quadinaros and a selection of brand-new protagonists such as Shade and Hibi.
Craig Derrick, executive producer at Lucasfilm Games, emphasized the necessity of balancing nostalgia with narrative substance. According to Derrick, the goal was to avoid empty cameos that feel hollow. Instead, characters like Sebulba were integrated because they provide genuine momentum to the game's story.
«It drives that story forward in a way that feels not only connected to the larger film franchise in the way that you've seen those characters before, but they actually have a real point. They have a real reason for being there, and so the fans get that instant flush of familiarity,» Derrick noted.
Subverting Expectations
While Sebulba’s mischievous nature is a cornerstone of his persona, Derrick hinted that the game might offer a few twists on his established reputation. The development team aims to leverage what players already know about the character, potentially subverting those expectations or allowing the character to evolve in unexpected ways as the story progresses.
The Ultimate Authenticity Challenge
Beyond his personality, Sebulba is famous for his unconventional piloting technique, which involves controlling his podracer using his feet. When asked about this unique trait, Kieran Crimmins, creative director at Fuse Games, issued a playful challenge to the community.
«I think if they're not controlling it with their feet, then are they really playing the game properly?» Crimmins remarked, adding that he would be thrilled to see fans attempt to mimic the iconic stance. «I would absolutely love to see someone try and do that. [...] Please send me the footage.»
Players looking to test their skills—with or without their feet—can mark their calendars for the release of Star Wars: Galactic Racer on October 6, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
