Spotify is deepening its personalization capabilities with a fresh feature called Playlist Notes. Unlike recent industry trends heavily focused on automation, this tool puts the power of expression directly into the hands of the listener, allowing users to attach short, written context to songs, podcast episodes, and audiobooks within their personal collections.


The feature allows for entries of up to 250 characters per track. This evolution expands upon Spotify’s earlier 'User Notes' implementation, which was previously restricted only to music tracks. Now, users can treat their playlists like a digital diary, documenting the memories, specific events, or nostalgic feelings associated with their favorite audio content.


How It Works

The process for adding notes is straightforward:

  • Navigate to a playlist you have created or a collaborative one.
  • Tap the three-dot menu icon adjacent to any track.
  • Select 'Add note,' input your text, and hit 'Save.'

Once saved, the note appears directly beneath the track title, providing immediate context to anyone viewing the playlist.


Beyond Personal Use: Editorial Context

Spotify is also bringing this feature to its own editorial teams. By incorporating these notes into professionally curated playlists, editors can share the stories and reasoning behind their song selections. As noted in the launch, this initiative has already debuted on 'New Music Friday' and is currently rolling out to several high-profile playlists, including:

Starting today, both Free and Premium users over the age of 16 in markets including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand will be able to read these insights.
