A New Leap for Base PS5 Graphics
Sony has officially introduced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a novel AI-driven upscaling technology specifically engineered for the standard PlayStation 5. Designed as an evolution of the existing PSSR found on the PS5 Pro, this solution leverages a streamlined neural network and optimized hand-tuned implementation to boost visual fidelity without requiring dedicated machine-learning hardware.
Testing the Performance: Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei
Tech experts at Digital Foundry have conducted an extensive analysis of the technology, testing it within Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Their initial impressions are highly positive regarding the technology's potential to address common resolution issues in modern gaming.
According to the Digital Foundry assessment:
«In Marvel's Wolverine especially, the quality boost can be exceptional. In terms of image quality analysis, suffice it to say that temporal stability is substantially improved, detail level increases, sub-pixel integrity is considerably superior, while artefacts from elements like moving foliage are much reduced.»
While the improvements in Marvel's Wolverine were significant, the impact on Ghost of Yōtei—a title already noted for high-fidelity graphics—was found to be less dramatic, though still present.
Frame Rate and Optimization Trade-offs
The analysis also focused on the performance cost of implementing QSSR. Richard Leadbetter of Digital Foundry observed that while there is a slight overhead—calculated at approximately 1.5 to 1.8 milliseconds per frame—the trade-off is often worth it for the visual gains.
- Dynamic Resolution Scaling: In modes utilizing dynamic resolution, QSSR allows for a balanced experience. The upscaler compensates for a lower internal resolution, resulting in a cleaner final image while maintaining performance.
- Minimal Impact: In several test scenarios, performance drops were described as "basically imperceptible."
Future Outlook
QSSR represents a significant step forward for the base PS5 model, proving that sophisticated AI-based upscaling is viable even on hardware lacking dedicated machine-learning acceleration. As the technology is expected to be integrated into more titles via patches and new releases, players can look forward to enhanced visual stability and detail across a broader library of games.
