Portrait photographers often praise the nifty fifty, but I prefer a longer focal length for even creamier bokeh. That's why I took notice when Sigma announced it's working on a new 85mm portrait prime.
The Sigma 85mm f/1.2 DG Art doesn't exist yet, unless you're at the CP+ Show in Japan, where a prototype is on display. It's officially slated for arrival in September 2026.
For now, the development announcement is just a tease, but the available details are intriguing. Sigma says the full-frame 85mm will complete its line-up of f/1.2 primes, joining the 35mm f/1.2 DG II Art and the 50mm f/1.2 DG DN Art.
Sigma drops several hints about what's to come, including “latest optical design” and “exceptional resolution.” The lens will also feature a dual High-response Linear Actuator autofocus motor.
The single photo doesn't make the lens look small, but Sigma describes it as “compact” and “lightweight.” The photo shows a dedicated aperture ring, a focus switch, and 82mm filter thread, though specs may change before launch.
The longer 85mm focal length creates more flattering portraits and creamier backgrounds. I suspect this will be a welcome addition to the Art Series, especially if it's like the Sigma 50mm f/1.2 DG DN Art, which earned five stars for its images and competitive price, though it's a bit heavy.
The Sigma 85mm f/1.2 DG Art is expected to launch in September 2026 in L-Mount and Sony E-Mount.
This isn't the only lens announced by Sigma at CP+; it follows the news of the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG II Art and the crop-sensor 15mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary.
