Major Shifts in Samsung’s Foldable Lineup

The latest Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event has concluded, revealing a significant evolution in the company's foldable strategy. Samsung officially introduced three distinct foldable devices: the Galaxy Z Fold 8, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and the Galaxy Z Flip 8. This expansion marks a strategic shift, moving beyond the traditional two-device launch to better address diverse user needs.


The new Galaxy Z Fold 8 adopts a "passport-style" design, offering a wider aspect ratio that significantly improves multitasking and media consumption. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra serves as the premium successor to previous generations, featuring a slimmer profile, a sophisticated triple-camera array, and advanced silicon-carbon battery technology.


Wearables and AI Integration

Beyond smartphones, Samsung refreshed its wearable portfolio with the Galaxy Watch 9 and the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2. Both devices are powered by the new Snapdragon Wear Elite chipset, designed for faster on-device AI processing and improved energy efficiency. The Watch Ultra 2, in particular, targets extreme athletes, boasting a 5,000-nit display and specialized scuba diving capabilities.

«The new Galaxy Z Fold 8, a new passport-style format, will allow Samsung to address different user needs, defending the more premium price point and reducing the risk that a single Fold design has to satisfy every potential buyer,» says Francisco Jeronimo, an analyst at IDC.

Across the new foldable lineup, Samsung has implemented several core hardware upgrades:

While the Z Fold 8 series offers notable innovations, the price adjustments—including a $100 hike for both the Flip and Ultra models—reflect the ongoing challenge of balancing premium hardware costs with consumer expectations.
