A Journey Through Gaming History

Ray Chase, the renowned voice behind Cyclops in X-Men '97 and Noctis in Final Fantasy 15, has a deep-rooted history with PC gaming. His passion began in childhood with an old DOS machine provided by his father. He spent countless hours exploring titles like Duke Nukem, Wolfenstein 3D, and Ken's Labyrinth. Today, alongside his extensive voice acting career—which includes working on upcoming seasons of X-Men '97—Chase serves as a co-founder of Sassy Chap Games, the studio behind Date Everything.

Creative Roleplaying and 'Smell Builds'

When it comes to his current favorite titles, Chase expresses deep admiration for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, which he considers a quintessential roleplaying experience. He revealed a hilarious and creative approach to the game:

«I'm doing a smell build where your character smells and looks so good and fancy that it actually works as armour. I wear perfumes and walk into battle with my fancy boy outfit. My enemies are too stunned.»

He enjoys the immersion of maintaining his character's hygiene, noting, «I'm always laundering my clothes. It's the best. I just love that game.»

On Challenges and Completionism

Chase is a fan of games that offer unique structural challenges. He praised Mina the Hollower for its music and the ability to tackle dungeons out of order, adding that he finds the protagonist's habit of taking naps after difficult tasks deeply relatable. However, he is not a fan of replaying games to unlock secret endings. «I think that's part of the fun, living with the consequences,» he explains, noting that he accepts his outcomes in complex titles like Disco Elysium without looking up missed content.

The Eternal Classics: Brotato and Slay the Spire

For on-the-go gaming, Chase relies on lightweight, high-replayability titles. He highlighted Brotato as a staple for travel, but his ultimate obsession remains Slay the Spire.

Reflecting on his dedication, Chase noted:

  • He has logged over 1,000 hours in Slay the Spire.
  • He has been playing since the early access phase when only the Ironclad and Silent characters were available.
  • He considers reaching Ascension 20 on all characters to be the «correct difficulty» for the game.

Tools and Digital Organization

When asked about his workspace, Chase keeps things professional and minimalist. He relies on Reaper and Audacity for his voice recording work, stating he could not function without them. As for his desktop environment, he prefers extreme order: «It's extremely tidy. There's almost nothing on it. I don't like having a bunch of stuff that I don't know where it is.»
