Successful Orbital Rendezvous
Two privately owned spacecraft have recently completed a high-precision maneuver in low Earth orbit (LEO), showcasing significant agility. The probes, known as Mira satellites, are operated by the California-based startup Impulse Space and successfully approached within 650 feet (200 meters) of each other.
According to the company, this successful operation confirms the potential for highly flexible orbital movements, which are increasingly sought after for various commercial and operational applications in space.
Strategic Significance of Agile Maneuvers
Tom Mueller, CEO and founder of Impulse Space, emphasized the importance of this milestone. «These types of dynamic, agile maneuvers are how we unlock full access to space after launch and create new mission possibilities. Our teams that design, build and operate Mira are leading the way toward a true space age, and customers across all sectors will be the beneficiaries,» Mueller stated.
Technical Capabilities of the Mira Platform
The Mira units are classified as orbital transfer vehicles, engineered to transport payloads to specific coordinates in space. Roughly the size of a dishwasher, these craft can accommodate up to 660 pounds (300 kilograms) of equipment.
The recent mission involved two specific satellites:
- LEO-2: Launched in January 2025.
- LEO-3: Launched in November 2025.
The process of bringing the two satellites together was a long-term project. LEO-2 initiated the rendezvous sequence in February 2025 with an extended engine burn, followed by a series of precise adjustments throughout the spring and summer to align orbits. By July, the craft executed a sequence of close-approach maneuvers, culminating in the 200-meter proximity milestone.
Collaborative Efforts and Future Outlook
The operation relied on advanced navigation support from partners including Starfish Space and HEO to manage the orbital tracking and photography. This is not the first time Impulse Space has tested such capabilities; the company previously conducted a rendezvous between LEO-2 and an earlier iteration of the Mira vehicle.
«We're showcasing some of the advanced capabilities that set Mira apart from other vehicles,» noted Drew Damon, vice president of spacecraft programs at Impulse Space. «Twice now, we've demonstrated that Mira has the agility and propulsion to support a new class of dynamic operations on orbit.»
As orbital maneuverability becomes a priority for both commercial entities and national governments—often for the purpose of satellite servicing or monitoring—Impulse Space continues to position its hardware as a leader in this specialized sector.
