Shifting Dynamics in the 007 Franchise
While the acclaimed title 007: First Light was developed, published, and financed entirely by Hitman creator IO Interactive, the future of the franchise may look quite different. The original game, which began development under the project codename 'Project 007' back in 2019, was launched before Amazon's full integration of the MGM brand into its gaming ecosystem.
Jeff Gattis, head of Amazon Games, recently indicated that while Amazon lacked comprehensive rights for the first installment, future sequels would fall under the purview of MGM and Amazon Game Studios. This suggests that Amazon is positioning itself to play a more significant role in the production and distribution of subsequent Bond titles.
The Vision for Synergy
Amazon sees a unique opportunity to create synergy between its film and gaming divisions. Gattis highlighted the strategy by pointing to the Tomb Raider franchise, where Amazon is currently managing both a television adaptation and the upcoming title Tomb Raider: Catalyst. This integrated approach reflects the company’s broader ambitions to bridge the gap between video content and interactive experiences.
Independent Roots vs. Corporate Oversight
IO Interactive’s success with First Light was fueled by its independence. According to studio CEO Hakan Abrak, the project was fully self-funded, a luxury made possible by the massive financial returns from the Hitman: World of Assassination trilogy. As Abrak previously noted:
“James Bond is fully funded by us. We are completely independent.”
Despite this independence, fans have expressed concern regarding how increased oversight from Amazon might impact future titles, citing the tech giant's inconsistent track record in the gaming industry. While IO Interactive has expressed intentions to create a James Bond trilogy—teased at the end of First Light—it remains to be seen how the creative autonomy of the studio will balance with Amazon’s corporate strategy.
Future Outlook for IO Interactive
Beyond the potential expansion of the 007 saga, IO Interactive remains busy with several other initiatives. The studio is currently developing an unannounced multiplayer fantasy title, supported by undisclosed partners. Furthermore, the developers have confirmed that they plan to revisit the Hitman series at some point in the future, ensuring that the studio remains a prominent force in the industry regardless of its next move with Bond.
