A New Approach to Camera Support
Peak Design, widely recognized for its high-end tripods and camera carrying solutions, is expanding its product line with the introduction of the Field Bracket. Moving beyond the traditional, static L-bracket design, the company has developed a modular system that aims to resolve the common limitations photographers face when transitioning between portrait and landscape shooting orientations.
Tool-Free Modular Design
The core innovation behind the Field Bracket is its focus on adaptability. Inspired by the company’s previously released Field Plate, the new system eliminates the need for hex keys or other manual tools. Utilizing the proprietary Field Latch mechanism—a button-activated tab that functions as a thumb-screw—users can attach or detach the vertical component in seconds.
This design allows the hardware to function as a low-profile base plate or transform into a full L-bracket for tripod stability. Furthermore, the upright section can be adjusted to create additional clearance for tethering cables, ensuring that studio workflows remain uninterrupted.
Expanding the System with Versatile Accessories
The Field Bracket is designed as the foundation of a broader ecosystem. Peak Design has introduced several modular add-ons to enhance functionality:
- Cheese Plate: Provides multiple 1/4″-20 and 3/8″-16 mounting points, as well as a cold shoe for attaching lights, external microphones, or field monitors.
- Beacon Finder Tag: A compact tracker that integrates directly into the Arca-compatible plate, offering a discreet way to secure camera equipment via Apple’s Find My network.
- Hand Strap: An ergonomic addition designed for better security and comfort during handheld shooting sessions.
According to Peak Design Founder and CEO Peter Dering, the goal was to create equipment that fits seamlessly into a photographer’s routine: «Instead of asking photographers to permanently attach functionality they only use some of the time, we built a system that can transform in seconds while remaining just as rigid and dependable as a traditional L-bracket.»
Pricing and Availability
The Field Bracket is currently being launched via a Kickstarter campaign, marking the company's 17th crowdfunding effort. The system is available for select camera models from Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, and Leica. The base brackets are priced at $149.95, while additional accessories such as the Cheese Plate, Hand Strap, and Beacon Finder Tag start at $39.95. Early backers of the campaign will have access to exclusive discounts prior to the full retail release.
