Panasonic has introduced the Lumix DMW-DMS1, a compact digital shotgun microphone designed to integrate seamlessly with its latest mirrorless cameras, offering high-quality audio without cable clutter. The DMS1 serves as an all-in-one solution for hybrid creators working on travel vlogs, studio interviews, and live events.

The microphone connects via the camera’s hotshoe, drawing power and transmitting digital audio without extra cables, streamlining run-and-gun setups. At launch, it is compatible with the Lumix S1II, S1RII, S1IIE, S5II, and S5IIX, with future firmware updates planned for the GH7 and G9II.

The DMS1 features a newly developed 10mm microphone array that delivers crisp, focused sound in challenging environments. An internal floating shock mount minimizes vibration noise, while a supplied windscreen and wind noise cancellation system suppress interference without compressing the audio signal.

A key feature is support for 32-bit float recording, capturing audio without distortion at sound pressure levels up to approximately 120dB, equivalent to standing near a siren or at a concert front. Two backup recording modes are included: in 4-channel mode, channels three and four serve as backups or capture ambient sound.

To suit various shooting scenarios, the DMS1 offers six directional modes: forward cardioid for talking heads, stereo and wide stereo for immersive ambience, forward and rearward supercardioid for focused pickup, and bidirectional supercardioid for two-person interviews, reducing the need for multiple microphones.

Weighing around 100g and measuring 73.7 x 45 x 63.7mm, the DMS1 is pocket-friendly. Physical switches provide direct control with a protective cover, and directional mode buttons feature adjustable brightness for low-light use.

The Lumix DMW-DMS1 will be available from mid-March, priced at $399 / £349 / €399.
