Expanding the Northgard Universe

Shiro Games continues to diversify its portfolio by venturing into new gameplay styles within its established Viking universe. The latest project, Northgard Battlegrounds, blends city-building mechanics with the tactical intensity of an auto-battler. Fans can get their first hands-on experience during an open beta, scheduled to run from July 9 through July 15 as part of the Steam TactiCon event.

This collaboration unites Shiro Unlimited, the publisher behind the original Northgard, with Funday Games, the developer recognized for the success of Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor. This partnership aims to inject a roguelike depth into the strategic foundations of the Viking-themed series.

Strategic Settlement and Combat

The gameplay of Northgard Battlegrounds rests on a fusion of two distinct mechanics:

  • Settlement Building: Players select from various Viking clans, each featuring unique traits. Success relies on strategic building placement, as clever layouts create synergies that bolster the strength of your warband.
  • Asynchronous Battles: Once your settlement is prepared, your forces engage in automated combat against the warbands of other players. Outcomes are determined by your tactical decisions and the favor you have earned from the Norse gods.

The progression loop follows a familiar cycle: build your base, engage in combat, adapt your strategy based on the results, and refine your layout for the next round.

Progression and Divine Blessings

Players manage two primary resources to fuel their advancement. Krowns, obtained through victories, are used to expand settlements and grow the economy. Meanwhile, Lore is dedicated to securing the favor of the Gods, which grants powerful, run-altering blessings. This system is designed to ensure that every session feels fresh and distinct.

According to Nicolas Cannasse, co-founder of Shiro Games:

«Exploring the auto-battler genre has allowed us and Funday Games to create an experience that both preserves and expands upon Northgard's strategic depth and core gameplay.»

A Proven Partnership

Both studios bring significant experience to the table. Shiro Games has seen the original Northgard sell over 5 million copies since its debut in 2018, demonstrating a long-term commitment to the franchise. Funday Games, based in Denmark, has also proven its capability in adapting popular indie IPs into successful spin-offs, most notably with Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor, which has drawn over 3 million players.

Beta Availability

The open beta period coincides with Steam TactiCon, a festival dedicated to strategy gaming, providing an ideal environment to attract a core audience and gather essential player feedback. Northgard Battlegrounds is currently slated for a Steam Early Access release in 2026. Interested players can test the game for free during the upcoming event by visiting its Steam page.
