Improved Update Speed
Motorola is officially beginning the deployment of Android 17 to its compatible smartphone lineup, prioritizing its flagship Razr and Edge models. Historically, the company has faced criticism regarding its software support velocity; however, this latest release shows a significant improvement. The Android 17 update has arrived approximately two months ahead of the timeline observed for the Android 16 release.
The rollout is currently underway, with reports confirming that the Razr Ultra (2026) has successfully transitioned to the new OS. This follows recent updates for the Edge 60 Pro and other select devices. By launching the software only a few months after Google's initial release and close on the heels of Samsung's own deployments, Motorola is demonstrating a more competitive stance in the current mobile landscape.
AI Features and Device Support
A key highlight of this software transition is the introduction of Motorola's personalized AI assistant, Qira. While the assistant will be available across many Signature, Edge, and Razr models, it remains absent from the budget-friendly Moto G series. In total, the company plans to bring the Android 17 experience to roughly 50 different devices.
Addressing the Support Gap
Despite the improved speed, Motorola still lags behind industry leaders like Google and Samsung, both of which now provide up to seven years of software support for many devices. Motorola typically offers three years of updates for a large portion of its portfolio. Nevertheless, the company is adjusting its strategy to remain relevant, with premium lines like the Motorola Signature now matching the seven-year support promise, while many flip-style Razr devices remain capped at three years.
New Features in Android 17
The update, which runs beneath Motorola's Hello UI, introduces several functional enhancements, including:
- Stacked widgets for the home screen and improved themed icons.
- Refined quick settings styling.
- Live updates: Real-time tracking for services like food deliveries or sports scores.
- Enhanced notification organization and the addition of notification summaries.
- Improved control over HDR brightness, alongside various bug fixes and performance optimizations.
