The Risks of Meta's Muse Image AI

Meta has unveiled its latest innovation, an in-house AI image generator named Muse Image. While the technology is impressive, it has triggered an immediate wave of controversy. The tool enables users to reference public Instagram profiles using an "@" tag to generate realistic depictions of individuals, provided their account settings permit it. Beyond creating lifelike portraits, the AI also demonstrates an ability to analyze and replicate the distinctive photographic styles of specific users.

This functionality has been labeled by critics as a

"privacy landmine waiting to detonate."
The primary concern stems from the fact that this feature appears to be enabled by default for public profiles belonging to users over the age of 18, leading to fears that artists and photographers may have their creative identities exploited without consent.

Testing the AI: Privacy and Limitations

To investigate these claims, tests were conducted to see how the AI handles user data. For accounts with strict privacy settings, the tool correctly blocked attempts to generate imagery. However, for profiles with more lenient configurations, the AI was able to create convincing likenesses of the account holders without any notification being sent to the subjects.

Regarding style mimicry, the results were mixed. When attempting to use a professional photography account as a reference, the system occasionally declined, suggesting instead that users describe the desired aesthetic in words. Despite this, the mere existence of a feature that allows the AI to ingest and reproduce a specific creator's visual style has caused significant disappointment within the creative community.

How to Protect Your Content

Meta is currently rolling out Muse Image across its ecosystem, including Instagram, WhatsApp, and eventually Facebook and Messenger. If you wish to opt out of having your content used to train or inform these AI models, you can adjust your settings manually:

  • Go to your profile and tap the settings menu (three horizontal lines).
  • Scroll down to the "How others can interact with you" section.
  • Select "Sharing and reuse."
  • Toggle off the option: "Allow people to reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features."

If this option is unavailable, ensure your app is updated to the latest version. Alternatively, you can manage permissions on a per-post basis by tapping on an individual image and selecting the "turn off reuse" option. These controls provide a necessary buffer for users concerned about how their visual data is being utilized by emerging AI systems.
