Leica has announced the global release of its Leitzphone smartphone, ending its previous status as a Japan-only product co-developed with Sharp. The new 'Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi' combines Xiaomi's latest flagship hardware with Leica's distinct design philosophy and camera expertise.

The device differentiates itself from co-branded models like the 'Xiaomi 17 Ultra by Leica' through its overt Leica-centric design. It features a black fibreglass back, a knurled metal frame, the iconic red dot, and a new rotatable camera ring for direct control over zoom, ISO, and other settings.

Camera hardware is shared with the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, including a 50MP 1-inch main sensor with LOFIC technology, a 200MP mechanical periscope telephoto lens, and a 50MP ultra-wide camera. The software offers a redesigned UI with Leica Essential Mode, multiple 'Leica Looks,' and bokeh simulations.

Powering the phone is Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 platform, with 16GB RAM and 1TB storage. It features a 6.9-inch OLED display and a 6000mAh battery. The Leitzphone is available now for £1,700 / €1,999.
