Larian Reaffirms Its Departure from the Baldur's Gate Franchise
Larian Studios has once again clarified its current standing regarding the Baldur's Gate series, explicitly stating that it is not participating in any new projects associated with the franchise. This move comes as a direct response to a recent announcement from Dark Horse Comics, which fans perceived as an indication of the studio's involvement.
The Source of the Confusion
The situation began when Dark Horse Comics teased an upcoming, as-of-yet untitled comic series featuring Karlach, one of the most popular companions from Baldur's Gate 3. In their social media announcement, the publisher tagged both Larian Studios and Wizards of the Coast, implying that the project was a collaborative effort between the three entities.
Given that Larian was the developer behind Baldur's Gate 3 and the creator of Karlach's character arc, the public assumption of their involvement was natural. However, the studio acted swiftly to correct the record.
Larian's Official Stance
Responding to the announcement on social media, the official Larian Studios account wrote:
«Maximum hijinks are happening right now, but we're not involved in any BG3 related projects. As soon as we bust outta here, we'll share more about Divinity.»
The post featured a photo of CEO Swen Vincke and lead writer Adam Smith, suggesting the studio is currently entirely focused on its own internal work.
Moving Beyond Dungeons & Dragons
Since the studio confirmed it would not be developing Baldur's Gate 4, there has been widespread speculation regarding the nature of its relationship with Wizards of the Coast. Despite rumors of potential conflicts, Swen Vincke has maintained that the separation was entirely amicable, noting that the team simply felt creatively exhausted from working within an established external IP and preferred to return to their own creative vision.
Larian's desire to distance itself from the comic project is likely an attempt to manage expectations and ensure there is no confusion regarding the studio's current development pipeline. With the team now shifting its full attention toward the next installment of the Divinity series, fans are eagerly looking ahead to what the studio creates when working within its own fantasy setting of Rivellon.
