A New Competitor in the Gimbal Market

Insta360 has officially unveiled the Luna Ultra, a sophisticated gimbal camera designed to compete directly with DJI’s popular Osmo Pocket series. Tailored for travel enthusiasts and vloggers, this new device represents a significant strategic expansion for the company.

Optical Excellence and Dual-Lens System

Developed in partnership with Leica, the Luna Ultra integrates a high-end Summicron lens paired with a one-inch 8K sensor to deliver superior image quality. Beyond the primary optics, the device features a secondary telephoto system. This setup includes a 1/1.3-inch sensor with an F2 aperture, enabling users to capture professional-grade bokeh effects and achieve up to 12x digital zoom.

«Luna Ultra marks Insta360's arrival in the gimbal camera space, backed by the full strength of our imaging expertise. We believe this category is ready for a new standard, defined by smarter technology, stronger performance, and a more intuitive user experience,» stated Max Richter, marketing VP and co-founder of Insta360.

Performance and Advanced Features

The Luna Ultra is designed to handle demanding recording scenarios with ease. Key technical specifications include:

  • Video Quality: Supports 8K resolution at 30fps with Dolby Vision integration.
  • Photography: Capable of capturing 37-megapixel still photos and 200-megapixel panoramas.
  • Audio: Features a built-in wind guard for cleaner sound, though external microphones are supported for more professional setups.
  • Display: Equipped with a two-inch detachable OLED touchscreen, allowing remote control from distances up to 66 feet.

Stabilization, Power, and Connectivity

To ensure steady footage, the device utilizes advanced AI-driven tracking that keeps subjects perfectly centered regardless of movement. The camera is powered by a 1,550mAh battery, offering up to four hours of continuous recording. Internal storage is set at 47GB, which can be expanded using a microSD card up to 1TB.

For post-production, users can utilize the native Insta360 mobile app. Additionally, the inclusion of built-in timecode support ensures seamless compatibility with professional software such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro.

Pricing and Availability

The Insta360 Luna Ultra is available starting June 10 through the manufacturer's website, as well as major retailers like Amazon and Best Buy. Priced at $770, it launches in two colorways: Cosmic Black and Stellar White. While it carries a higher price tag than the standard DJI Osmo Pocket 4, the Luna Ultra offers a distinct advantage as a readily available option in the U.S. market.
