A Fresh Perspective on a Timeless Adventure
If given the chance to experience any video game for the first time again, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time would be my top choice. Having spent two hours with an early-access preview provided by Nintendo of Europe, I am confident that the upcoming 40th Anniversary remake for the Nintendo Switch 2 is the best possible way to enjoy Link’s iconic journey.
My session included the opening moments in Kokiri Forest, a trek across Hyrule Field, time spent in the Hyrule Castle Town Market, and a full run of the Forest Temple as Adult Link. These segments convinced me that the developers have managed to stay faithful to the original while implementing meaningful enhancements.
Artistic Evolution and Visual Design
The visual overhaul is the most immediate change. The world is rendered in vibrant greens and deep blues, making the game a visual delight. The level of detail is impressive, from the intricate textures of Link's tunic to the abundance of sprites and fairies filling the air. While the new, somewhat maximalist art style has sparked debate online, it feels thematic and justified. It highlights the game’s core contrast between childhood innocence and the eventual corruption of the world. Additionally, the move to a free-camera system provides a level of immersion that the original, with its fixed perspectives, simply couldn't achieve.
Audio and Narrative Refinements
The sound design has received a significant upgrade, featuring re-orchestrated music and updated sound effects. The voice acting is a notable addition, though some performances may take time to grow on players. While some character voices felt a bit unexpected compared to the classic source material, the overall atmosphere remains consistent with the spirit of the original.
Regarding the story, there are slight adjustments to narrative beats. The Great Deku Tree provides more context regarding the fate of Hyrule, and some character placements have shifted. These changes seem designed to streamline the story and improve localization rather than alter the core plot.
Enhanced Gameplay and Future Potential
At its heart, the gameplay remains true to the original, but with polished mechanics. Combat feels smoother, and the dungeons have been tweaked to accommodate Link's improved mobility, which includes better jumping and swimming. A new addition is the "Fairy Messages" system, which serves as an intuitive hint mechanism for players navigating puzzles.
I am particularly curious to see how later areas, such as the Shadow Temple, will be handled. There is also potential for the developers to address long-standing limitations, such as the frozen state of Zora's Domain. As I noted during my session:
«Nintendo has built a reimagining of greatness from the ground up, and it might even be hard to return to the original without noticing its every flaw or limitation.»
The 40th Anniversary remake is shaping up to be a masterful update. I look forward to diving into the full release on November 5th to see if the rest of the game holds up to this impressive standard.
