In 1984, manga artist Akira Toriyama sought inspiration for his next series following the success of Dr. Slump. He turned to Journey to the West as a structural template. As Toriyama explained in a 1995 interview, he believed utilizing this established narrative would simplify the creative process. This became the basis for his protagonist, Son Goku, who was directly modeled after the Monkey King.
The Evolution of 'Super' Transformations
As the Dragon Ball series grew into a global phenomenon, Toriyama introduced the 'Super Saiyan' transformation. For practical reasons—specifically to reduce the workload of inking hair in every issue—he depicted the evolved Goku with golden hair and a glowing aura.
This design philosophy echoed through the gaming industry. In 1992, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was released, introducing 'Super Sonic,' a form that similarly features golden fur and a glowing appearance once all Chaos Emeralds are collected.
The Modern Connection: Keanu Reeves
The influence of these character archetypes continued into the 21st century with the creation of Shadow the Hedgehog, a character designed as a powerful rival to Sonic. Fast forward to 2024, and the legacy of these interconnected creative choices reached a new milestone: Keanu Reeves was cast as the voice of Shadow the Hedgehog.
In recent interviews regarding his portrayal of the character, Reeves has embraced the role with the same intensity he is known for in his live-action films, jokingly asserting that his version of the character could defeat Sonic himself.
