A New Peak in Storage Requirements
The highly anticipated JRPG Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is shaping up to be an unprecedented heavyweight in terms of file size. In a recent discussion, director Naoki Hamaguchi indicated that the game is tracking toward a 200GB installation. This figure is exceptionally high for a single-player RPG, positioning it far above the industry standard.
Balancing Physical Media and Digital Demands
Hamaguchi addressed concerns regarding the physical retail release, which had previously been confirmed to require additional downloads beyond what is included on the Blu-ray discs. Explaining the necessity of this massive footprint, Hamaguchi noted the technical hurdles the development team faces:
«Things are still getting worked out, but it's probably going to be around 200GB of game. I understand there are a lot of opinions about this topic, but at the end of the day, the fact is we need to overcome the hardware to a certain extent.»
The Growing Trilogy Footprint
To put this scale into perspective, the storage requirements for the Final Fantasy 7 project have grown exponentially:
- Final Fantasy 7 Remake: 100GB
- Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: 155GB
- Final Fantasy 7 Revelation (Projected): 200GB
Combined, the entire trilogy could eventually demand over 450GB of storage space. For comparison, the original PlayStation 1 release, while groundbreaking for its multi-disc format, occupied less than 2GB of data total.
Industry Context
While some live-service titles have reached similar or larger installation sizes, finding a single-player experience that requires 200GB is rare. As storage costs remain a concern for many gamers, such a requirement presents a significant barrier. However, given the massive scale and high-fidelity production values expected from the Final Fantasy 7 series, Revelation may be one of the few titles capable of justifying such substantial storage demands.
