The Quest for Extreme GPU Thermal Performance
The YouTube channel TrashBench recently conducted an unconventional experiment to determine if mounting a massive array of cooling fans—and even an AIO liquid cooler—onto a high-end graphics card could unlock superior performance. The project aimed to see if pushing thermal headroom to the limit via extreme cooling would translate into tangible frame rate improvements for the Asus ROG GeForce RTX 3080.
Testing the Limits of Airflow
The baseline testing began with the stock Asus ROG cooler, which maintained a stable 63°C under load during the Unigine Heaven stress test. The enthusiast then began a series of modifications:
- Swapping the stock shroud for three Arctic case fans lowered the temperature to 52°C.
- Upgrading to thicker server-grade fans initially seemed promising, but improper air sealing caused temperatures to rise to 54°C.
- Adding a row of five tiny, high-RPM (15,000 RPM) server fans along the top of the card failed to break the 50°C barrier, despite creating noise levels reminiscent of a jet engine.
The AIO Breakthrough
After several air-cooling iterations, the modder integrated a 360mm AIO liquid cooler onto the backplate. This configuration achieved a dramatic thermal result, bringing the GPU temperature down to a stable 41°C. According to the creator,
«It nearly cut the temperatures in half. It looks awesome. It sounds awesome.»
The Performance Reality Check
While the thermal reduction was undeniably impressive, the practical gains in gaming performance were underwhelming. Testing in Shadow of the Tomb Raider showed only a modest increase in frame rates, even when taking full advantage of the extra thermal headroom for overclocking. Reflecting on the experiment, the creator noted:
«And it got me 2 FPS. So, not worth it.»Ultimately, the high efficiency of the original Asus ROG factory cooling solution meant that the extreme modifications provided little benefit for real-world gaming performance, serving instead as a testament to the extremes of hardware modding.
