A New Chapter for RPG Fans

Archetype Entertainment has finally unveiled an extensive look at Exodus, an upcoming sci-fi RPG developed by a team comprised of former Mass Effect creators. While the title shares clear DNA with the beloved space opera franchise, the 20-minute gameplay demonstration revealed during the Future Games Show highlights a variety of distinct mechanics and narrative foundations.

Setting the Stage: The Omega Centauri Cluster

The story of Exodus takes place deep in the future, within the Omega Centauri Cluster—a region situated 16,000 light-years from Earth. Humanity’s history in this sector has been defined by the rise and fall of various interstellar empires, eventually leading to the emergence of the Celestials, a genetically enhanced branch of humanity. Players step into the role of Jun Aslan, a 'Traveller' tasked with recovering ancient 'Remnants' to cure their home world of a deadly plague known as 'The Rot.'

Gameplay and Progression Mechanics

The demo showcased a mission on the planet Tseng, offering a clear look at third-person combat. Players command their party in real-time, utilizing diverse tools such as grappling hooks and explosive ordnance. Regarding character progression, game director Chris King noted that the system avoids rigid class locks:

«Once you make that choice in character creation, we have skill trees that embrace these things, and the deeper you go on those we have what's called mastery. One of the interesting choices you make as a player is do you build hybrid setups where you dabble in multiple things, or do you just go all in on one specific tree.»

Defining the Exodus Identity

Comparisons to Mass Effect are inevitable, given that the studio was founded by industry veterans like James Ohlen, Chad Robertson, and Drew Karpyshyn. However, the developers are keen to emphasize what makes Exodus unique, particularly its implementation of time dilation.

Based on Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, this mechanic means that time moves differently depending on the player's actions and location. According to the studio, this feature adds significant weight to the narrative, as decisions made by the player can result in massive time shifts, profoundly impacting the fate of entire civilizations. As General Manager Chad Robertson explained, the team aims to deliver an experience built on elements that push beyond the boundaries of previous sci-fi franchises.

Release Expectations

With a planned release scheduled for early 2027, Exodus is slated to arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. As development continues, fans can expect further updates regarding this ambitious space-faring RPG.
