Following a mixed reception to the 360 Vis Nav, Dyson has returned to the robot vacuum market with a renewed focus, recently unveiling three new models: the flagship R3 Nurovi Spot+Scrub UV, the R2 Nurovi Wash+Dry, and the R1 Nurovi Dry. Nathan Lawson Mclean, a senior design manager at the company, shared insights into the engineering breakthroughs that define this new generation of cleaning bots.


1. The Evolution of Reuleaux Mopping

The R2 Nurovi Wash+Dry utilizes a unique mopping system featuring rounded 'Reuleaux' triangles rather than standard circular discs. These pads rotate eccentrically, allowing the robot to reach deep into corners with precision. According to Lawson Mclean, these were in development since 2019, though early prototypes struggled with stability, which he humorously compared to «riding a bicycle with square wheels.»


2. Rethinking the Side Sweeper

Dyson has finally embraced side sweepers, a feature previously rejected by founder James Dyson, who feared they would simply scatter dust. To solve this, engineers utilized advanced geometry inspired by the brand's conical vacuum heads. These new 'origami-inspired' sweepers hold bristles at a specific angle, ensuring debris is corralled effectively while preventing the common issue of hair entanglement.


3. UV Technology for Invisible Messes

The R3 Nurovi features a specialized UV light that illuminates dried, invisible stains such as milk or sugary spills. Once detected, the robot performs an intensive scrubbing motion over the area to ensure the mess is fully removed before it becomes a hygiene issue.


4. Expanding the Lineup with the R1

For users who prefer simplicity or lack hard flooring, the R1 Nurovi Dry offers a vacuum-only alternative. Lawson Mclean highlights that this model serves as an entry point for those intimidated by complex wet-and-dry units or those concerned about protecting delicate floor coverings, such as Persian rugs.


5. The 'White Glove' Onboarding Service

Perhaps the most practical improvement isn't found on the machine itself, but in the support provided. Dyson has introduced a 'Dyson Concierge' service, offering users a video call with a human expert to assist with unboxing and mapping. Lawson Mclean notes that many previous issues with robot performance were simply due to poor initial setup, and this new service aims to bridge that knowledge gap.
