A Seamless Narrative Experience
Disney and Epic Games are finally delivering on their promise of an interoperable universe. Starting August 16, 2026, visitors to Disney’s Hollywood Studios or Disneyland Park can bridge their physical park experience with a new digital adventure in Fortnite. By linking a MyDisney account to an Epic Games profile, guests can unlock exclusive in-game rewards tied to their participation in the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run attraction.
According to Julia Humphreys, VP of Production at Disney Digital Entertainment, this initiative is designed to ensure that a guest's story doesn't end the moment they exit the park. «With this foundational experience we wanted to prove out something that we've believed for a long time: that a story doesn't have to end when you leave the park, and it doesn't have to start over from zero when you pick up a controller,» Humphreys noted.
The Mechanics of the Crossover
The integration works through a simple loop: guests accept a mission from Hondo via the My Disney Experience app, complete the attraction, and subsequently receive an unlockable reward for the Smugglers Gambit island in Fortnite. This island features a distinct environment where players take on the role of smugglers in the Outer Rim, navigating quests and encounters that mirror the high-stakes feel of the Star Wars galaxy.
The technical synergy is powered by Unreal Engine. While the physical ride utilizes a custom, high-end multi-GPU build of Unreal Engine 5, the digital island was developed using the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). This shared technological foundation allowed developers to translate assets—such as ships and environment models—directly from the ride into the game, rather than creating them from scratch.
Looking Toward the Future
This collaboration represents more than just a digital souvenir; it signals a shift in how Disney intends to manage its intellectual property. By creating a persistent loop where actions in the real world impact digital progression, Disney is setting the stage for future integrations.
While the immediate impact on park attendance may be modest, the strategic implications are significant. If successful, this model could be expanded to other popular attractions, such as Toy Story Mania or WEB-Slingers. For now, Smugglers Gambit serves as the inaugural chapter in a long-term strategy to unify Disney’s diverse entertainment offerings. As Humphreys expressed: «It's very much the opening chapter with Epic Games, and I can't wait for people to experience where this relationship goes next.»
