As the final chapter of the ambitious Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, Revelation, approaches its April 8 launch, series director Naoki Hamaguchi has opened up about the massive scope of the project. Spanning the final third of the original game, the story sees Cloud and his allies face the ultimate threat: Sephiroth and the impending destruction of the planet via the Meteor, alongside the emergence of the colossal Weapons.
A Decade in the Making
Hamaguchi acknowledges that the trilogy's success is deeply tied to the consistency of the development team, which has remained largely intact for over a decade. When asked if this multi-part approach could serve as a model for future blockbuster game development, he remains cautious.
«I think that this project has contributed hugely to Square Enix, not only in terms of the business as a successful game, but also in building this team that I can trust. But whether this becomes a model case or a template is, I think, a bit of a difficult question, because it becomes a question of whether or not other teams can recreate that.»
Maintaining a stable creative vision over such a long period is a rare luxury in the industry, and Hamaguchi notes that a shift in leadership mid-project could have fundamentally altered the trilogy’s trajectory and thematic depth.
Balancing Urgency and Exploration
Despite the looming threat of the Meteor, the game retains the series' hallmark commitment to diverse side content, such as minigames. Hamaguchi explains that the narrative team, led by scenario writer Kazuhige Nojima, carefully balanced this urgency with character motivations.
«It's not that you're just rushing into this final battle,» Hamaguchi says. «They're saying, 'Well, if this is the end, then let's do what we want to do, let's do what feels right for us along the way.'»
Character Depth and New Mechanics
Revelation promises deeper dives into characters who were optional in the 1997 original. Hamaguchi highlights that Yuffie and Vincent receive significantly more attention this time around. Additionally, the game expands the role of Zack Fair, providing him with a unique, playable combat system and an expanded narrative arc that promises to surprise long-time fans.
The game also promises a faithful recreation of the iconic Rocket Town mission, offering players more control over exploration, including the use of Cid’s vehicle, which features a customizable soundtrack.
The Ultimate Showdown
Perhaps the most anticipated element is the final encounter with Sephiroth. Hamaguchi teases that the team is pulling out all the stops to exceed the spectacle of previous installments.
- Escalated Combat: The battle aims to surpass the complexity and scale of both Remake and Rebirth.
- Homage to Tradition: The team is incorporating legendary moments from the original, including specific nods to iconic Limit Break attacks.
- Satisfying Conclusion: While keeping details under wraps, Hamaguchi confirms that the battle will be «very extravagant» and designed to deliver a high-end, satisfying conclusion for the fans.
With massive boss fights, a refined world map, and a clear dedication to the source material, Revelation stands as the culmination of a decade of development effort, aiming to provide a definitive end to this reimagined classic.
