A New Atmosphere for the Cursed City
The latest update for Valve’s invite-only MOBA, Deadlock, titled "City Never Sleeps," brings a significant visual and mechanical evolution to the game. This major revision refines the game's identity, introducing a hauntingly detailed environment alongside a substantial list of gameplay balance adjustments.
The entire map has been overhauled with three distinct thematic zones: a vibrant city center, a university steeped in supernatural lore, and an ominous stock exchange. The environment is now populated with unique entities tailored to these areas. According to the update, players will encounter peculiar sights such as "pickle jars with hands growing out of them" in the center, sentient book stacks, and creatures made of trash bags inhabiting the lanes.
The map also features four specialized districts, including a theater area populated by steampunk automatons controlled by spectral stage hands and a Chinatown district featuring a bell tower where teams compete for a fountain of souls to secure a strategic currency advantage.
Introducing Six New Heroes
Valve is expanding the roster with six unique characters, who will be introduced to the game via a community voting system. Among the most anticipated is the "Rat King," a character that originated as a fan concept and evolved into a popular community meme.
The remaining new roster members include:
- A nurse character who utilizes a syringe as a firearm.
- A Chess master who features a floating movement style.
- A skeleton equipped with a rocket launcher.
- A seemingly innocuous elderly witch.
- A young artist wielding a paintbrush as a weapon.
Valve plans to roll these heroes out at a pace of two per week, starting this Friday.
Quality-of-Life and Technical Improvements
Beyond the aesthetic changes, the update implements several functional upgrades to improve the player experience:
- Visual Clarity: Health bars have been redesigned for better readability, and team indicators have been added to track allies.
- Interface Upgrades: The shop interface is now more intuitive, featuring advanced filtering options for faster item navigation.
- Communication: The kill feed has been streamlined, and new ping mechanics allow for better tactical coordination.
- Audio and Training: Character voice lines have been doubled, and a new menu allows players to review them. Additionally, new practice tools and comprehensive combat analysis features have been introduced.
- Accessibility: New settings include custom UI color options, subtitles, and automated gameplay assists like auto-mantling and auto-shooting.
While this update is massive in scope, Valve continues to keep the game in an invite-only phase. Players are left to speculate on how many more substantial overhauls will occur before the title sees a full public release.
