Future Aspirations for EverQuest Legends
The developers behind EverQuest Legends, an ARPG-focused remix of the classic MMORPG, recently participated in a Twitch stream to discuss the game’s trajectory. A significant highlight from the discussion was the potential introduction of character classes and races that were never featured in the original title.
David Youssefi, the executive producer at Daybreak Games, clarified the studio's stance on these additions:
«Definitely, I think, long-term we have discussed additional races, additional classes. Is it realistic to have another class by [the upcoming expansion] Kunark? I don't think so. But definitely would not rule it out for the longer-term vision of the game. In fact, I'm sure we would.»
Eda Spause, CEO and technical director at Game Jawn, expressed full agreement with the sentiment, reinforcing that this vision is a shared goal for the team.
Balancing Ambition and Reality
Despite the optimism, the development team remains realistic regarding the logistical challenges. Lead content designer Eric Wellman noted that the feasibility of such additions depends heavily on the scope of the work and whether the development resources are justified by the end result.
Spause provided further context on the internal discussions, stating:
«I'm of the opinion it would be, however, that opinion is also at odds with the reality of how much we have to do.»
While not a formal guarantee, these comments suggest that the studio is actively planning for the title's growth. Should these plans come to fruition, EverQuest Legends would follow a similar path to games like Old School RuneScape, effectively using a classic foundation to build entirely new content.
Evolution of Gameplay
While the game has already introduced unique elements like the kerran race and reworked zones, the addition of new classes would significantly shift the meta for players who prioritize build optimization and loot collection. With EverQuest already covering a vast array of archetypes, finding room for unique new classes remains an intriguing challenge. Potential inspiration could be drawn from the sub-classes found in EverQuest 2, which offered more specialized roles compared to the original game's broader categories.
For those interested in the current state of the title, EverQuest Legends remains a distinct experience that caters to a specific niche of players, often described as an idiosyncratic and unconventional take on the genre.
