A New Twist on a Classic Arcade Staple
One of the highlights of attending gaming conventions is the opportunity to jump into local multiplayer sessions with strangers. At PAX Australia, I discovered Bumper Bout, a title that immediately caught my attention with its unique premise and polished execution. It turns out that competitive, player-versus-player pinball is an incredibly compelling idea.
How It Works
Think of Bumper Bout as the pinball equivalent of Puyo Puyo Tetris. Each player controls their own pinball board on one side of the screen. The core gameplay involves managing your flippers while simultaneously sabotaging your opponent. As you focus on hitting skill shots, your rival can flick extra balls into your field of play, forcing you to handle the added chaos. As one player noted, the concept originated from the simple thought: «I love pinball, but no one ever dies.»
Strategic Gameplay and Mechanics
The game operates on a health-based system where losing a ball costs you one heart. The first player to lose five hearts loses the match. However, the game goes beyond simple survival:
- Attack Balls: Hitting bumpers and specific targets grants you attack balls. These can be sent to your opponent's board to increase their difficulty.
- Ultimate Abilities: If you collect four attack balls, you unlock a powerful character-specific ability, such as creating gravity wells or launching bombs onto the playfield.
Diverse Playfields
The levels are designed to enhance the frantic nature of the game. For example, the space-themed stage features orbiting satellites and moons that complicate trajectories, while the foosball-inspired level allows players to control extra figures on the board. Despite the typical noise and distractions of a busy show floor, Bumper Bout proved to be deeply immersive.
Looking Ahead
While many convention demos struggle to maintain their momentum upon full release, there is high hope for Bumper Bout. The developers have promised a robust package featuring single-player arcade and survival modes, alongside full online multiplayer functionality. For those eager to test their reflexes, a demo is currently available on Steam, with the official launch scheduled for October 29.
