From Small Concept to Major Expansion
The development of World of Warcraft: Forever did not begin with the massive scale currently seen in the beta. According to associate production director Clay Stone, the team's initial vision was much more modest.
"Our original pitch internally was: We'll do four new dungeons, and the next thing we know, we're doing six, and the next thing we know, we're doing nine," Stone revealed. The team's growing enthusiasm fueled a "snowball effect," pushing them to create a much more substantial experience than originally planned.
The Evolution of 'Classic' Philosophy
Stone highlighted that WoW: Forever represents the next step in a gradual shift away from the strict "#NoChanges" philosophy that defined earlier Classic releases. The success of Hardcore and Season of Discovery provided the developers with a vital sandbox to test player reception and experiment with new content within the vanilla-era framework.
Reflecting on the success of Season of Discovery, Stone noted:
"The response to it blew us away… And that's really when the discussions began about, 'Hey, what does a version of this look like that is not pitched as a season to players?'"
Exceeding Player Expectations
The developers believe that the final scope of the project has surpassed what many in the community anticipated. While there were versions of the project that were limited to minor class adjustments—such as giving Paladins a taunt—the team felt motivated to push for something much larger.
"The actual scope of what we're ultimately delivering with launch was something that built up over time," Stone explained. Seeing the positive reaction from players during the recent beta has been highly rewarding for the team, as it validates their decision to aim higher and provide a more comprehensive experience than initially scoped.
