Adobe has announced it will discontinue Adobe Animate, the software successor to the iconic Flash animation tool. The program, which defined the visual style of early web games, will be removed from sale starting March 1, with support ending for individual users by 2027 and enterprise clients by 2029.

The decision has provoked strong criticism from animators and game developers who still rely on the software. Notable creators, including those behind shows like 'Star Trek: Lower Decks' and games like 'Mewgenics', use Animate for its distinctive vector-based workflow.

Adobe cited evolving technologies and new platforms as reasons for the discontinuation, suggesting users migrate to other Adobe applications like After Effects. However, the company's vague explanation and the subscription-based model, which prevents permanent ownership, have fueled frustration within the creative community.
