Unique Tech Memorabilia from Russia
Russian chip manufacturer Mikron has introduced a creative way to monetize its production process by offering framed test wafers as exclusive souvenirs. The collection features 12 distinct designs, each retailing for 12,500 rubles (roughly $170). These decorative pieces come in various frames and include commemorative inscriptions, though the company notes that availability is strictly limited.
Inside the Wafer Collection
According to reports shared on social media, some of these 200mm wafers incorporate the AMUR MIK32 RISC-V chip, which has been in domestic production since 2022. There are also indications that the company is currently gearing up to launch a successor, the MIK32-2. Depending on the specific design chosen, a single framed wafer may contain anywhere from 30 to 120,000 individual chips, including components used in infrastructure like the Moscow Metro’s transport cards.
Design and Specifications
The presentation of these items is highly varied, with Mikron offering frames in simple black or white, as well as more decorative styles featuring paisley or space-themed patterns. The technical specifications provided on the product displays describe the items as follows:
«Silicon wafer with integrated circuits. The satellite plate is used in the technological process for quality control at all stages of microcircuit production.»
Each framed unit measures 270 x 270 x 15mm and weighs approximately 365 grams, making them a significant addition to a tech enthusiast's wall.
More Than Just Silicon
Beyond the high-end framed wafers, Mikron’s souvenir shop offers a range of other curiosities. One notable low-cost item is a small vial containing air sourced from the company's cleanroom facility in Zelenograd, priced at approximately $2. The shop also features a selection of more traditional gift items, such as puzzles, magnets, and branded mugs.
