A Record-Breaking High-Altitude Test

The smartphone accessory manufacturer RhinoShield recently made headlines with an extraordinary stunt: dropping an iPhone 17 Pro from 30,607 meters (approximately 100,000 feet) above Kiruna, Sweden. The device, equipped with the brand's AirX case, plummeted from a high-altitude balloon without any parachutes or protective netting to dampen the impact.

During its 25-minute descent, the smartphone was subjected to extreme environmental conditions, with temperatures ranging from -40°F to 140°F. After a five-hour search operation, the recovery team located the device, which reportedly remained fully functional, capable of taking photographs and placing calls. This feat has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the «Highest Drop of a Mobile Phone in a Phone Case (Natural Landforms)».


The Engineering Behind the Stunt

The preparation for this event spanned an entire year and involved a partnership with an aerospace firm, representing an investment of $500,000. While the stunt is visually impressive, some experts suggest that the altitude itself is less significant than it appears.

Due to a smartphone's low mass and high aerodynamic drag, it reaches terminal velocity long before hitting the ground. Once a device hits this maximum speed, the specific height of the drop becomes largely irrelevant. Furthermore, the terrain—a forest floor with significant vegetation—acted as a natural cushion.


Durability Features of the AirX Case

Despite the debate over the necessity of the extreme height, the performance of the RhinoShield AirX case remains noteworthy. The product is manufactured using thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) and incorporates a 360-degree air-cushion chamber. Its design relies on a proprietary "ShockSpread" three-point compression structure.

Internal testing metrics shared by the company highlight the material's impact-absorbing capabilities:

  • Compression technology can reduce a 4,000-gram impact force to approximately 775 grams.
  • The casing has reportedly withstood 24,000 tumble impacts without sustaining damage.

For consumers interested in this level of durability, the AirX case is currently priced at $62. While few users will ever drop their phones from the stratosphere, the product is clearly designed to withstand the more common rigors of daily life, from accidental drops in parking lots to handling by children.
