A New Direction for Smart Eyewear

Ray-Ban and Meta have unveiled a fresh addition to their smart glasses lineup: a camera-free version designed specifically to mitigate ongoing privacy concerns. While these glasses retain key features like Meta AI interactivity and audio streaming capabilities, their design prioritizes discretion by appearing almost identical to traditional eyewear.

Evolution of the Smart Glasses Market

Since the initial collaboration between Meta and Ray-Ban, the market for smart glasses has expanded significantly, now offering hundreds of style variations. Historically, almost every model has featured an integrated camera, allowing the device and Meta AI to analyze the user's visual environment. While this feature is functional, it has frequently sparked controversy regarding user privacy.

The Features of the Audio-Only Model

To address these concerns, the latest release removes the camera entirely. Users can still leverage Meta AI for tasks such as answering queries or translating languages, and the integrated speakers in the arms provide audio for music and assistant responses. By eliminating photo and video capture capabilities, the companies aim to reduce the social stigma often associated with wearable cameras.

Regarding aesthetics, the Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses closely resemble standard Ray-Ban frames. They are launching in the iconic Clubmaster and Burbank styles, featuring 23 unique lens and color combinations, making it difficult to distinguish them from non-smart models at a glance.

Technical Specifications and Battery Life

While the arms are slightly thicker to accommodate the internal smart components and speakers, the manufacturer has kept the weight impressively low at approximately 43g—only slightly heavier than the standard 38g Clubmaster frames.

A significant advantage of removing the camera hardware is the improvement in efficiency. According to the manufacturer, the device now boasts a battery life of up to 12 hours on a single charge, with additional charge cycles provided by the included carrying case.

The move represents a strategic effort to broaden the appeal of wearable technology by focusing on utility while respecting user privacy boundaries.

Availability

The Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses are scheduled for release in the United States on October 13, with a retail price of $349. Details regarding pricing and availability in the UK are expected to be announced at a later date.
