New Challenges in the Forbidden Rites League
Following the successful Return of the Ancients update, Grinding Gear Games is set to launch the first event league for Path of Exile 2, titled Forbidden Rites, on September 4. Rather than introducing massive balance overhauls, this event focuses on refining specific gameplay mechanics and adding a fresh twist to the campaign.
During the campaign, players will encounter Ritual altars that trigger monster waves. According to the developer, these altars will occasionally spawn multiple bosses simultaneously, challenging players to survive in exchange for powerful unique loot. This high-intensity combat aims to bring the chaotic fun of endgame mechanics into the early leveling experience.
Revamping the Trial of Chaos
One of the most significant updates in this event is the complete overhaul of the Trial of Chaos. Previously considered a frustrating slog where players were forced to choose between increasingly punishing debuffs, the mode is receiving a much-needed balance pass.
“In the new Trial of Chaos, those modifiers won't start out as painful as they do now, and they'll finally offer something in exchange for the agony by giving you a small boost to the quality of loot that drops.”
With faster pacing and better rewards, the developers hope to transform this necessary activity—used for unlocking ascendancy classes—into a much more enjoyable experience for the player base.
Endgame Changes and Future Outlook
The Forbidden Rites event is designed to accelerate endgame progression, allowing players to reach the world map and engage with new content more quickly. Key changes include:
- Abyss Incursions: Glowing green ravines will appear, filled with challenging Abyss monsters.
- Expedition Integration: The Expedition mechanic is now a core component of the game, allowing players to trigger ground explosions to battle emerging foes.
While some players may be disappointed that large-scale balance changes have been deferred until the full 1.0 launch on December 11, the lack of meta shifts offers a stable environment for those looking to experiment with new character builds. For many, this event serves as the perfect testing ground to explore new classes, such as the Duelist, before the official release later this year.
