Extreme Horror Has Real-World Consequences
The Outlast franchise, developed by Red Barrels, has established itself as one of the most uncompromising horror series in gaming. Known for its visceral depictions of violence, gore, and nudity, the series frequently pushes the boundaries of the genre. However, it appears that the impact of this intense content extends beyond the player base, affecting those involved in the development process itself.
A Traumatic Playtesting Experience
In a recent interview, Red Barrels co-founder Philippe Morin discussed the studio’s dedication to uncompromising horror. Morin clarified that the high level of gore was not a strategic effort to incite controversy, but rather a creative choice reflecting the team's personal preferences. He noted, «We didn't start like 'Oh, we've got to make the goriest game out there.' It was just, 'we're making a horror game, so obviously we'll make it gory.'»
This dedication to intensity, however, has proven overwhelming for some. Morin shared a particularly striking anecdote regarding a playtest session: «We started pushing and pushing, and you know, I remember there was a playtest, and somebody, after a couple of hours, basically ran out of the studio to go cry outside.» According to the developer, that individual never returned to the studio.
Vetting Talent for a Dark Environment
Because the development of such disturbing material requires specific fortitude, Red Barrels has implemented a rigorous interview process. Morin explained that they ensure candidates are fully aware of the nature of the projects they will be working on. He added, «People have to be comfortable with that because obviously you hear stuff in the studio that [if] you said the same thing in a different studio, you'd end up in a meeting with HR.»
Despite these efforts, the studio still faces challenges in retaining staff who are prepared for the subject matter. Morin recalled a scenario where a new hire resigned just days after starting, despite being warned about the graphic violence, because they struggled with other thematic elements—specifically religious content—that they hadn't anticipated.
Unwavering Creative Direction
While the intensity of the games has proven too much for some, the commercial success of the series remains undeniable. With The Outlast Trials achieving strong early access sales and the entire franchise reaching over 60 million players since its inception in 2013, it is highly probable that Red Barrels will maintain its current trajectory. Should the studio move forward with a third installment, fans should not expect a softer approach to the horror they have come to expect.
