The End of the CMF Phone Era

Nothing has officially confirmed that there will be no new CMF smartphone releases in 2026. This decision marks a significant shift for the sub-brand, which gained popularity for its budget-conscious approach with the CMF Phone 1 and the CMF Phone 2 Pro. The primary driver behind this cancellation is the sharp increase in global memory component costs, which has made it impossible to maintain the affordability that defined the CMF identity.

The Economic Reality of Component Costs

Both Nothing CEO Carl Pei and co-founder Akis Evangelidis have been transparent about the supply chain challenges. In a detailed statement on social media, Evangelidis explained the difficult decision:

«We've decided not to launch a new CMF phone this year. We were working on a successor but with memory prices where they are right now, we can't build a phone that feels like a genuine step forward at a price that makes sense for CMF.»

Carl Pei further emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that memory prices have essentially doubled multiple times since initial planning phases began. He suggested that consumers shouldn't expect the deep discounts seen in previous sales seasons, as the surge in demand for AI-related hardware continues to strain the semiconductor market. Consequently, CMF devices have already been removed from the official Nothing online store.

What’s Next? The Nothing Phone (4b) Tease

Despite the setback for the CMF line, the company isn't exiting the affordable smartphone segment entirely. Akis Evangelidis reassured fans that the launch season is not over, teasing that there is “more to come” in the near future.

Official channels, including Nothing India, have begun circulating promotional material featuring a sketch of an upcoming device. The teaser, captioned “(b)usted,” strongly hints at the development of a Nothing Phone (4b). Given that the Nothing Phone (4a) debuted earlier this year at £349, industry observers are speculating on the positioning of this new model. Early glimpses of the design reveal a single circular camera element, suggesting a minimalist approach intended to keep production costs low while providing a fresh option for budget-conscious consumers.
