A New Direction for HoYoverse
At this year's Gamescom, HoYoverse unveiled Nodusfall, a project that signals a significant shift for the studio known for its successful gacha titles. While the developer has built its reputation on vibrant, anime-inspired character collection games, Nodusfall embraces a completely different identity.
One of the most notable changes is the absence of randomized character acquisition. HoYoverse has yet to confirm any traditional gacha elements, and reports indicate the studio is focusing on cosmetic monetization rather than character draws. This decision marks a daring move away from the business model that defined their previous massive hits.
Beyond Souls-likes and Monster Hunting
Upon its debut at Opening Night Live, critics drew parallels to Elden Ring and Monster Hunter. However, while these titles may have served as inspiration, Nodusfall establishes its own unique gameplay loop.
Regarding the Elden Ring comparisons, the connection is primarily aesthetic. The developers describe a setting where «divine authority has crumbled and order has collapsed»—a world that feels simultaneously desolate and breathtaking. When it comes to Monster Hunter, the similarity lies in the mission-based structure of hunting large, multi-phase creatures in expansive environments. Beyond that, the experiences diverge significantly.
Class-Based Combat and High-Octane Action
Players do not simply control a blank slate; they choose from distinct characters with specialized combat styles. During hands-on gameplay, the roles ranged from heavy-hitting tanks to support healers. The combat is notably more aggressive and fast-paced than the deliberate rhythm of Monster Hunter.
Key features of the combat system include:
- Precision Clashing: A mechanic where players must time a strong attack exactly as an enemy strikes to land a counter-blow.
- Dynamic Ultimates: Players select a defining ultimate ability that can drastically transform their character's form and combat capabilities mid-fight.
- Role Synergy: Success relies on the team working together, especially during complex encounters where players must manage multiple targets simultaneously.
The Spectacle of Combat
The core of Nodusfall is the sheer joy of engaging in intense, high-stakes battles. Whether facing off against a massive dragon or its armored rider, the gameplay remains energetic and visually spectacular. Despite the potential for complex underlying systems in the final product, the game currently offers a straightforward, highly accessible, and satisfying experience.
As of now, there is no official release date for Nodusfall. Those interested in keeping up with development, including information regarding future beta testing, are encouraged to monitor the official project channels.
