Meta Quest's v85 software update is now available for users in the Public Test Channel (PTC), introducing a significant visual overhaul and several innovative features. The headline change is the full replacement of the old navigation system with the new Navigator UI, designed for quicker app launching.
A standout experimental feature for Meta Quest 3 users is the Surface Keyboard and Touchpad. This tool projects a virtual keyboard and laptop-style touchpad onto any flat surface, leveraging the headset's depth-sensing capabilities. Meanwhile, Quest 3S users gain the ability to customize the action button's short and long-press functions.
The update also removes the Horizon Feed panel due to low user engagement. Significant privacy and security upgrades include automated malware scanning after app installs, new privacy indicators, and passkey support in the Meta Quest Browser for password-free logins.
New accessibility features allow 2D windows to be controlled via voice commands and head movements, benefiting users with limited hand mobility. Meta is also rolling out a redesigned Ongoing Activities panel for easier access to controls for media, calls, and recordings.
While packed with features, testers advise caution with the PTC version due to potential instability, recommending waiting for the stable public release in the coming weeks.
