Combating AI Impersonation
As the internet becomes increasingly saturated with AI-generated content and sophisticated fake profiles, Meta is introducing a new identity verification program for Facebook users. The initiative is designed to help genuine human users more easily identify and interact with other real people on the platform.
How the Process Works
The verification process is straightforward: users must provide a video selfie, which the platform then compares against their existing profile photographs using facial recognition technology. Meta notes that the entire procedure is designed to be completed in just a few minutes. To be eligible, users must be at least 18 years old and maintain a profile that adheres to Facebook’s community standards.
Once successfully verified, a badge will be displayed across various Facebook features, including Marketplace and Dating. It is important to note that, unlike the paid Meta Verified subscription, this new badge serves strictly as identity confirmation rather than an endorsement or a guarantee of a user’s reliability. Participation in this program is completely free.
Addressing the Rise of Scams
This rollout arrives as bad actors increasingly leverage generative AI to create realistic fake accounts. These automated profiles can generate lifelike photos and detailed backstories to deceive users at scale. By implementing this verification step, Meta aims to provide a layer of protection against fraud and malicious activity.
Broader Platform Updates
The identity verification tool is part of a series of updates announced by Meta. Among these is a renewed focus on "immersive video"—a clear attempt to compete with the short-form video dominance of platforms like TikTok. Meta plans to test a full-screen video interface that appears immediately upon opening the app. Unlike past controversial design changes, the company stated that users will retain the option to revert to their standard feed-first experience.
Availability
The new verification feature will not be available for Pages or accounts using Professional Mode. According to the company, the global rollout will begin this coming Monday, starting in specific markets before expanding to more regions worldwide.
