Adapting to a Changing Market

Survival game The Long Dark was initially expected to conclude its lifecycle following the release of its final story episode earlier this year. However, developer Hinterland has announced a strategic shift. Although the studio is still actively developing the sequel, Blackfrost, a dedicated team has been reassigned to create new downloadable content (DLC) for The Long Dark's survival mode.

According to the studio, this decision is a direct response to the current state of the gaming industry. As the studio noted: «When we first announced Blackfrost, the sequel to The Long Dark, the game industry was in a very different place. In the short time since, entire business models have been thrown into chaos, the geopolitical situation has become extremely complicated, the picture of what the next generation of console hardware will be has become a lot less clear, and the amount of time and money players spend on new games has declined as everyone turns to the comfort and security of games they already know.»

Roadmap for The Long Dark

Over the next two years, Hinterland intends to support the survival sandbox with several key initiatives:

  • Regular bug fixes and quality-of-life updates.
  • The integration of new features and regions previously featured in the final story episode.
  • The release of two new DLCs, one of which will follow the episodic structure of the Tales From The Far Territory expansion, while the second remains in early development with details currently under wraps.

Status of the Blackfrost Sequel

Hinterland has clarified that Blackfrost remains in active development, though its transition to early access has been postponed until next year. The studio maintains its independence, noting that it has declined external publishing offers that did not align with their vision. «We've not yet encountered a partner who we feel is truly motivated by what's best for Hinterland or for our players, so we'll continue to self-fund and self-publish the game,» the studio stated.

Pricing and Economic Challenges

The studio is currently evaluating potential price increases for the standalone Survival Mode and upcoming DLCs to maintain financial stability. However, they are proceeding with caution, acknowledging the global economic pressure on consumers. «We're also mindful that the economic reality faced by a ton of folks today is that prices are increasing everywhere and you probably can't really afford for games to get more expensive as well. We're really trying to find a good balance here,» the developer concluded.
