New Features for Google Maps
Google appears to be working on a significant update for its navigation platform that could transform how users interact with restaurants. Recent discoveries in the underlying code of the latest Android version of Google Maps suggest that a food ordering integration is in the development phase.
Functionality and AI Integration
According to information reported by Android Authority, the application contains specific text strings indicating a new capability. These strings include phrases such as “ask Maps to order food” and “Maps will order for you — even while you're on the go.”
The feature seems designed to operate within the existing “Ask Maps” framework. As a reminder, this tool utilizes Gemini AI to facilitate natural language conversations regarding search queries. It is expected that Google will leverage the agentic capabilities of Gemini to handle the ordering process, though the precise level of AI autonomy remains to be seen.
Strategic Implementation and Availability
While the feature is not yet functional, it suggests a streamlined experience where users could request menu items and head to the establishment for pickup. Regarding how this might coexist with current market leaders, it is possible that Google will collaborate with established delivery platforms like DoorDash or Uber Eats rather than attempting to displace them.
“It remains unclear how much autonomy the AI would have, or if the service will be rolled out to all devices or restricted to specific hardware like the Pixel series,” sources noted.
For now, users will need to wait for further confirmation from the tech giant. Observers anticipate that more concrete details may emerge during the launch of the next generation of Pixel hardware, currently expected in August.
