The Evolution of Foldable Technology

With the upcoming pre-order date for the iPhone Duo approaching, the mobile industry is closely watching how Apple’s entry will disrupt the landscape. For years, Android enthusiasts have noted that manufacturers like Samsung paved the way for foldable devices, with the original Galaxy Fold debuting back in 2019.

Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem at Google, recently shared his perspective on the shift. While acknowledging the timeline difference, he welcomes the broader recognition of the technology:

«I think that it's wonderful to see more people realizing after so long that the foldable space is the place to be. And Android is usually where you see the future first.»

Market Impact and Ecosystem Loyalty

Despite the head start enjoyed by Android, market analysts anticipate significant growth for Apple in the foldable sector. Forecasts from Counterpoint Research suggest that Apple could capture a quarter of the market within its first year, potentially expanding to 40% by 2027.

Much of this success is attributed to the strength of Apple’s walled garden. Many long-time users have expressed a desire for a foldable device but felt unable to switch platforms due to their deep integration into the Apple ecosystem. Samat remains optimistic, however, noting that Apple's arrival will likely create a "halo effect," ultimately boosting overall consumer interest in the foldable form factor.

The Push for App Optimization

A critical battleground for foldables is software support. Apple has placed significant emphasis on encouraging developers to optimize their applications for larger, flexible displays. While Apple showcased polished experiences for apps like Slack and Netflix during its event, Android is working to bridge the gap as well.

Samat acknowledged that while some apps still appear stretched on Android foldables, the ecosystem has made significant strides:

«I think that as this form factor becomes more and more popular, developers realize that there's more and more value in investing in it. I think one of the things that we've done is to make the tools simpler and easier for them to invest in.»

Looking Ahead

Many Google-native applications, such as Gmail and YouTube, are already fully optimized for foldable screens. Furthermore, third-party apps like TikTok have demonstrated how to utilize the extra screen real estate effectively, offering immersive viewing on external displays and split-screen functionality for comments and navigation on the interior.

Ultimately, Samat believes the growing popularity of foldable devices is an industry-wide win. He views the increased competition not as a threat, but as validation that the foldable category has become a mainstream success.
