A Resurgence of Player Interest
The final live service update for Destiny 2 has drawn a massive crowd of players back to the game. Fans have flocked to the shooter to commemorate its legacy, while many are using the occasion to voice their hopes for a potential Destiny 3.
According to data from SteamDB, the game reached a peak of over 164,000 concurrent players on Steam today. This figure marks the highest activity levels for the title since the release of Episode: Echoes in June 2024.
Reflecting on Recent Struggles
This recent surge stands in stark contrast to the performance of the Edge of Fate expansion, which launched in July 2025. Despite being a major release, it only managed to hit a peak of 108,000 concurrent players—a figure that declined rapidly in the following months. By April of this year, the game’s player count had dwindled, dropping below 13,000 users.
Edge of Fate was widely considered a low point for the franchise. In a critical review of the expansion, Phil Savage noted that the game had become «worse to play in almost every way.» At the time, concerns were raised regarding the future of the series, with writer Tim Clark noting:
«I have never known a Destiny 2 expansion with as many problems as Edge of Fate, and I'm worried the game may not survive them.»
The Final Chapter
Ironically, the announcement that live service content is coming to an end has sparked a renewed sense of engagement within the community. Bungie’s final update, titled Monument of Triumph, features an extensive list of changes, reflecting a major final effort from the developers.
As the game transitions toward maintenance mode, it has reclaimed the spot as the top-selling title on Steam, bolstered by a significant price reduction to $26/£22. The success of this final update has led many in the community to question if the studio might reconsider its roadmap. Currently, a fan-driven petition urging Sony and Bungie to develop Destiny 3 has garnered more than 370,000 signatures, highlighting the enduring passion of the player base.
