The Case Against Halting AI Advancement

Mike Cannon-Brookes, the CEO of Atlassian, has expressed that there is no immediate requirement to decelerate the progress of artificial intelligence, regardless of the rising number of high-profile voices advocating for a pause in development.

During the Atlassian Team Europe 2026 conference, Cannon-Brookes clarified that the company maintains no plans to alter its current development strategy.

«Will we slow down? No, we won't. There's no logical world where I think that happens,»
he stated, highlighting that the company prefers a nuanced approach to technological integration.

Geopolitical Realities Driving Innovation

According to Cannon-Brookes, the rapid pace of AI evolution is largely fueled by international competition. He suggests that as nations strive to maintain leadership in emerging technologies, the momentum of development will inevitably remain high.

He emphasized that rather than hoping for a different global landscape, businesses must adapt to the existing reality.

«I think the reality of the global geopolitical world is not going to change. So we work out what we do about that world rather than wishing it was different. I don't know. Maybe I'm too pragmatic about it, but it's not in my control,»
Cannon-Brookes added, noting that efficiency and productivity gains remain the primary drivers for these advancements.

Atlassian’s Strategy and the Trust Factor

Positioning Atlassian as a major player in the global software industry, Cannon-Brookes underscored the company’s deep integration into the workflows of numerous Fortune 500 organizations. He acknowledged, however, that earning user trust remains a significant hurdle as AI capabilities expand.

To address these concerns, Atlassian is focusing on transparency within its tools. By integrating AI agents directly into its platform, the company aims to demonstrate clear operational oversight, ensuring users can rely on their software. He concluded by noting that clients are looking toward the future, stating,

«Customers are not subscribing for the software we've built, but for the software we will build.»
Ultimately, the company’s vision centers on fostering a new “multiplayer” era for AI agents, emphasizing collaborative potential.
