A Call for More Intense Combat

The core identity of Arc Raiders has been a subject of ongoing debate since its inception. Players remain divided between the collaborative experience of fighting off machines and the adrenaline-fueled desire to engage in player-versus-player combat. While developer Embark Studios has leaned into the more cooperative side of the extraction shooter genre, not everyone in the community is satisfied with the focus on PvE.

Recently, a Reddit user named Forward_Problem_7550 voiced the frustrations of the more aggressive player base, stating, «Sick of hearing about PvE. Give the PvP players what we actually want.» Their solution is a proposed «Rival Gangs» mode, designed to shift the focus back to high-stakes encounters between human players.

The Mechanics of 'Rival Gangs'

The proposed concept introduces a specialized map modifier that turns up the intensity significantly. Under this rule set, loot values would be substantially increased to reward risk-taking, while extraction points and entry hatches would be kept to a minimum to force confrontation.

To ensure the stakes remain high, the mode would feature a mandatory entry requirement:

  • Loadout Value: Players must bring at least 30,000 raider coins worth of equipment to enter the map.
  • High Stakes: The rule, «Hostiles have been spotted in the area. Only well-equipped Raiders are getting clearance to head Topside,» would serve as the barrier to entry.

Why This Concept Works

Implementing PvP as an optional map modifier is an attractive proposition. It would allow players to engage in intense combat without negatively impacting their general matchmaking standing or the experiences of those who prefer a more relaxed, cooperative environment. Furthermore, the gear-value floor ensures that every participant has something valuable to lose, fostering a balanced and high-tension gameplay loop similar to concepts explored in titles like Marathon.

While this proposal remains a fan-made concept, it highlights a clear desire for deeper competitive systems within Arc Raiders. Whether or not Embark Studios decides to integrate such a feature, the discussion underscores the importance of balancing the needs of both the PvE community and the fans who want to test their skills against other Raiders.
