Streamlining Wi-Fi Password Sharing
While sharing internet access credentials has always been a functional part of Apple's ecosystem, recent software updates have significantly refined the process. Even if you are a long-time user, it is easy to overlook specific tools introduced in recent years that make managing network access much smoother.
In the past, sharing Wi-Fi details was often restricted to automated prompts between nearby Apple devices, which frequently failed to trigger or proved inconvenient. Fortunately, modern iOS versions provide more direct methods to retrieve and distribute your network passwords without hassle.
Accessing Passwords via Settings
To view a password for a network you are currently connected to—or have joined previously—ensure you are within range of the router and follow these steps:
- Open the Settings app on your device.
- Select Wi-Fi.
- Locate the network you need and tap the blue information (i) icon next to it.
- Tap the Password field. You will need to authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode.
- Once the password is revealed, select Copy to add it to your clipboard for sharing via email or text.
Using the Dedicated Passwords App
With the release of iOS 18, Apple introduced a centralized Passwords app, providing a dedicated space for your credentials. This serves as an alternative management hub for those on the latest software:
- Launch the Passwords app and authenticate.
- Select the desired Wi-Fi network from your list.
- Tap the password field to uncover the text, then copy it as needed.
The QR Code Shortcut
If you are sharing the password with someone physically present, the QR code method is arguably the most convenient. Within the network details, select Show Network QR Code. The other person can simply scan this code with their camera to join the network instantly, eliminating the need for them to manually type in a complex password.
