The Polish development studio Bloober Team is expanding its impressive portfolio with an unexpected project. Following their work on Cronos: The New Dawn, the Silent Hill 2 remake, and the Layers of Fear series, the studio has officially unveiled a sci-fi psychological horror title integrated into the iconic Star Trek franchise.
Protagonist and Storyline
Titled Star Trek: Shadow Frontier, the game places players in the shoes of Ro Laren, the Bajoran officer originally introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation and later seen in Picard. Actress Michelle Forbes, who portrayed the character on screen, reprises her role for the game. This marks another high-profile gaming appearance for Forbes, who is also well-known for voicing Dr. Judith Mossman in Half-Life 2.
The narrative follows Ro as she embarks on a high-stakes rescue mission to a remote planet controlled by a mysterious extraterrestrial entity. According to the game's official description on Steam:
«In true Star Trek fashion, Ro's mission is driven by duty and purpose. But here, discovery comes at a terrible cost. The more she uncovers, the deeper she is pulled into a corrupted labyrinth where her memories twist and the planet threatens to sever her connection to reality.»
Gameplay Mechanics and Expectations
Players will utilize classic Star Trek equipment to navigate the environment and overcome threats:
- Tricorder: Essential for analyzing objects and uncovering secrets.
- Phaser: Used both as a tool for solving intricate puzzles and for engaging in combat.
While the developers have promised a mix of exploration, puzzle-solving, and cinematic combat sequences, it remains to be seen how heavily the game will lean into traditional action tropes compared to the more diplomacy-focused nature of the television series.
